What to do with your old television - Mecklenburg County, North Carolina

Out with the old…

…in with the new

February rings in a new age of television viewing.   So, if you took the plunge and upgraded to one of those beautiful flat-screen high-definition televisions, what the heck are you going to do with that old set you’re no longer using?

  • Whatever you do, don’t dump it in a landfill.  Because they contain lead, TV tubes can pose environmental and health risks.
  • Mecklenburg County has four full-service drop-off centers. To find the location nearest you, go to www.wipeoutwaste.com.
  • Pay it forward.  Drop your unused set off at The Salvation Army (1011 Central Ave.).  Check out their donation valuation guide.  Very helpful when you like to write off donations on your taxes.
  • If your old set is history, Crisis Assistance Ministry’s drive-through drop-off area at 500-A Spratt St. is also another great place to give.

Just in case you’re curious about this TV, keep reading below…

Planet Janet is going “green”

I’m a wife and a mother.  I just want to do what’s right — for my family, for our planet.  I’ll never profess to have all the answers; I’m exploring our world and all the possibilities, just like you are.  Daily I am reminded that sometimes doing the right thing costs more and takes a tad more effort.  Maybe I can’t afford to convert to solar-powered energy, but I can fill up three recycling bins per week, thank you very much! Sure, I use environmentally friendly grocery bags, but I know I can do more.

“GREEN” TIP FOR CHARLOTTE, N.C.:  In Mecklenburg County, you can recycle paper, cardboard, cans, glass bottles and plastic.  The County will only take plastic with a recycling number of 1 or 2To learn more about what you can recycle and how to do it, click hereDon’t have enough room in your recycling bin for all that mess?  No worries, my fellow Charlotteans.  To acquire another recycling bin or two, click here.

planetjanetonlinecom-green-page-logo.pngThe fate of our planet Earth rests in our hands. So, what are you going to do about it?

Al Gore’s Academy Award-winning movie, “An Inconvenient Truth,” brought wide-spread attention to the environmental dangers our world faces. But when you think about all the changes you COULD make, it’s downright overwhelming, isn’t it? (Calculate your personal CO2 impact on the environment here.)

Just like you, I’m trying to figure things out as I go. So along my “green” journey, I want to share what I’ve learned along the way. Hopefully, I can be of some help to you!
